Camcorder tips
for travelers

Size matters

Unless you are a professional photographer, it's usually best to travel with a small camcorder (such as the first two on the list). When the camcorder is large and heavy, you are more likely to leave it in the hotel room. Too bad. Chances are you will miss some great unexpected photo opportunities. Moreover, a large camcorder makes you and your unit more conspicuous, which would make the strangers you are photographing become camera conscious. The looks on their faces change, from spontaneous to guarded.

Camera shake

It's common in the videos taken by many tourists. Unless youR camera has an image stabilizer, brace yourself against a wall or rest your camera on a flat surface such as a table or car top. Or, use a tripod or monopod. This is especially advisable when you are using the zoom.

Adapters

If you want to see your videos on a local TV set before you return home, be sure you have the right adapters, cords and cables for the country you will be visiting.

Thievery

A camcorder is a prize in a thief's mind and motivates him into action. Carry your camcorder in a case that doesn't suggest what you are toting. And don't take it out if you are unsure of the environment's safety. Also don't loosely carry it when walking down a sidewalk on a narrow street - thieves on mopeds can grab it out of your hands on the fly.
