It's one of the world's most respected museums. It displays precious Japanese, Chinese, Korean and other Asian treasures from pre-historic to pre-modern (pre-1800) times.
The Kyoto National Museum's Collections Hall is undergoing a major renovation. It will not reopen until after 2013. However, the Special Exhibition Hall will be operating during this period.
It diverse cultural treasures embrace many art forms:

Sculptures
They include both Buddhist and secular objects.
For art lovers who cannot visit its city, the Kyoto National Museum has a splendid online photo catalog presenting nearly all its art and historical objects. The 10,000 images can be searched by title, artist, century, and more.
The Kyoto National Museum opened its doors in 1897 and slowly evolved into its present form.
