Shore excursions

Voyager shore excursions have several advantages over those from bigger vessels.

You gain extra shore time because the Voyager has just 700 passengers to disembark and embark while the big cruise liners have thousands.

You also save time because it is a mid-, not large-sized vessel. This means it has a greater chance of docking at a quay instead of having to anchor in open water. Walk down the ramp and you're ashore. There is no need to commute in a tender.

Voyager shore excursions have smaller groups and better guides than offered by most liners. For example, when I was in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, I noticed that the guide leading a Voyager group was explaining the artworks on a much higher plane than did the guide leading a group from a large cruise boat.

Another advantage is you go on a shore excursion with seasoned travelers. So your group's precious time is less likely to be hijacked by a member asking dilettante questions.

If you are not taking a group or independent shore excursion, you can travel to and from the center of a port town on the Voyager's free frequent-departure shuttle busses.

Onboard tours

Don't miss the tour of the bridge. You'll meet the captain (see his photo above). His bridge officers will explain the high-tech navigation system. Be sure to see the radar screen. It pinpoints the location of boats as far as the horizon. Click the icon of one of the them and you will learn over a dozen vital facts including the boat's name, current speed and direction.

Sign up for the kitchen tour. Your guide (sometimes the chef) shows you the prepping, cooking and storage areas. You gain an insider's understanding of how the kitchen manages to prepare a wide variety of dishes for hundreds of passengers.

Enrichment programs

The typical Voyager guest has a keen intellectual curiosity, so it's natural for the cruise to conduct a variety of lectures and other programs on topics like art, antiques, cooking and wine. They are led by guest lecturers and other experts in their fields.

Circle of Interests

On select itineraries, The Regent Seven Seas Voyager organizes Circles of Interest for various specific topics (such as art or photography). Passengers sign up when they book their cruise reservation. After they meet their fellow enthusiasts at an onboard cocktail party, they dine, attend lectures, and go on special shore excursions together. They arrive as strangers, leave as friends.
