Hot  Broadway shows

Alphabetical.

Boeing-Boeing

2008 "Best Play Revival" Tony Award winning. This comedy stars a womanizer in Paris who juggles simultaneous affairs with three flight attendants.

Grease

A high school student falls heads over heels for the new girl in school in this rock 'n' roll production. He has to compete for her attention with the Pink Ladies, a trio of spunky students.

Mamma Mia

A young woman at her wedding on a Greek Island devises a plan to discover the identify of her father. She suspects that he is one of her mother's past three lovers.

Wicked

This is a Wizard of Oz prequel. It tells us how and why the wicked witch transformed from being good to bad, and had a parting of the ways with the good witch, her former buddy.

No-longer hot shows

A Broadway show can lose its hotness due to factors such as:

Performance fatigue

Sub par cast changes

Decline in box-office demand

If a show is dropped from my hot list, it does not necessarily mean you won't enjoy it. Some formerly hot shows still entertain and are worth seeing. Good examples:

Avenue Q
Chicago
Hairspray
Phantom of the Opera
Spamalot
Spring Awakening

In addition, there are over a dozen active Broadway shows that never made the hot list in the first place. They are beyond the scope of this guide.

Family pleasers

"Family" defines child-pleasing performances. I do not include them in my hot lists because they are designed primarily to entertain children, not adults. Below are the top family pleasers:

Lion King

Little Mermaid

Mary Poppins
