bent, narrow streets. Watch out for exploding fire crackers.

This Irish parade captures the imaginations of both the Irish and non-Irish in
New York. Over 50,000 members of Irish bands and organizations march up Fifth
Avenue. The mayor, too.

Fourth of July Fireworks
Macy's sponsored waterside event is one of the world's most exciting firework
displays. It employs the latest pyrotechnics modules. Spectacular.

September

Feast of San Gennaro
This Little Italy religious (and very visibly commercial) event takes place on narrow

especially on Fridays and Saturdays.

October 31
Halloween Parade
Colorfully costumed and spirit-of-the-moment dancers, bands, and floats travel
north on Sixth Avenue from
Spring to 21st. Viewers line the streets. The mood pulsates.

November
First Sunday
New York Marathon
It passes through all five New York boroughs, from Staten Island to
Manhattan's Central Park. Over 30,000 runners participate and a million sidewalk
spectators cheer them on.

November 27
Macy's Thanksgiving
Parade
Gigantic helium-inflated cartoon-character balloons and bouncy-stepped marching bands
slowly make their way down from 77th to Macy's Department Store on 34th Street. A
family favorite.

November
Usually during month's last week
Christmas Tree Lighting
A freshly cut, skyscraping Christmas tree is placed in front of the Rockefeller Center
ice skating rink and adorned with countless lights. It's ceremoniously lit with
great fanfare to countless onlookers.

December 31
Times Square New Year's
Eve
The celebrated ball drops to mark New Year as a million spectators packing
the square and nearby streets gleefully scream and shout.
