Camera bag for SLRs

A quality camera bag is a wise investment when you consider the potential replacement costs and repair bills for your camera and camera accessories. Look for these camera bag features:

Padding
Enough to significantly reduce bump and drop damage
Weatherproof
Sudden downpours, dusty winds, and other elements can harm your equipment
Space
Ample room for all your storage needs (crowding causes problems)
Easy retrieval
Avoid deep searches by having a number of individual zippered openings – and many dedicated compartments and pockets for organizing the contents
Straps
Strong and comfortable - and adjustable for shoulder and hand carrying

Toting a compact

You could store it in a purse or everyday bag instead of a full-sized camera accessory bag. Just be sure to create a cushioned zone with shock-absorbing material.

There are camera bags designed specifically for compact cameras. That's your best option.

Lens cap

This piece is essential for SLR cameras. It fits over the front of the lens, protecting it. Unless you've attached the cap to the camera or lens with a cord, you could easily lose it. Pack a spare cap in your camera accessory bag. (Note: Nearly all compact digital cameras do not need a lens cap because the lens is automatically covered when the camera is turned off.)
