Why Lunenburg
is special

Lunenburg in Nova Scotia province is a small, picturesque maritime port with a
250-year history of fishing and shipbuilding.

Tips & insights
on Lunenburg
in Canada

The
old town harborside is photogenically lined with boats and bright-hued buildings
(see photo).

Lunenburg
straddles the narrow neck of a peninsula, giving it waterfronts on both sides.

Be
sure to visit the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic. It has well-presented
historical exhibits on fishing, shipbuilding and sailing. The whole family will
enjoy it.

A
replica of Canada's famous Bluenose racing/fishing schooner is home-based in
Lunenburg. Like the original, it was built locally. You can take a two-hour
summertime cruise on it when it’s not docked in Halifax or on ambassadorial
trips to various ports in Canada and the USA.

Lunenburg was settled in 1753 under the British flag by French, German and Swiss
immigrants.

The
historic center has a number of cozy small inns and B&Bs. Some have scenic harbor
views.

Lunenburg
is a little over one hour by road from Halifax. If you have time, stop by
Peggy’s Cove on the way. This Nova Scotia fishing community has a lovely
setting.
