The word "Tate" by itself defines the state operation that controls the museum network comprising the:

Tate Modern

Tate branches
in Liverpool and St. Ives

Previous name

Before the Tate Modern was born, The Tate Britain was named the Tate Gallery. It was casually called "the Tate".

Getting there by boat

The Tate Britain sits upstream on the opposite bank of the Thames River. A high-speed riverboat shuttle links the two museums.
