PurposeThe Tower of London has served many purposes, including as a citadel, royal residence, government seat, and prison.
Infamous
royal eventsKings and queens were imprisoned and, sometimes, executed here. They include two wives of Henry VIII who were beheaded. One King (Richard III) gained the throne when he incarcerated and (reputedly) ordered the murder of his nephew, the 13-year-old King Edward V, in the Tower of London.
ConstructionThe square castle keep (see photo on page one) was built nearly 1,000 years ago by William the Conqueror. Subsequent rulers enlarged the building and wall complex.
