Why
Verdon Canyon
is special
The Verdon Canyon's rugged natural setting delights a wide variety of travelers
- sightseers, hikers, rafters, rock climbers, to name but four.

Tips & insights on
Verdon Canyon

The
gorge is also known as the Verdon Gorge and the Grand Canyon of Verdon.

It
was carved through the limestone rock over the course of millions of years by
the Verdon River.

The
Verdon Canyon's prime stretch is 21 kilometers (13 miles) long and up to 700
meters (2300 feet) deep. At one point, the bottom of the gorge narrows to 6
meters (20 feet).

No
one made it completely through the Verdon Canyon until the early 20th century.
Today, many hikers and rafters do it.

Car
travelers have a choice of several itineraries. The Route des Cretes ("Crest
Route") on the right bank (north rim) is the best. It's a 23-kilometer (14 mile)
one-way loop road.

The
longer Corniche Sublime on the left bank (south rim) is outstanding, too.

You
can combine the two routes for a 100-kilometer (60-mile) trip. There are many
tempting viewpoints - and, in the peak summer tourism period - the roads are
congested. So, plan on a full-day excursion.
