Cruise tips you can trust

Test yourself

Can you name the world's best 5 luxury cruise lines? My Best 5 luxury cruise list is based on my impartial survey of seasoned cruisers.

Best 5
luxury cruise lines

Alphabetical

Crystal Cruises is renowned for the dining quality. Has two ships, each carries about 1,000 passengers. Most cabins are suites. Crystal Cruises has the most traditional style of the luxury lines.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has the most laid-back cruising style of the best 5 lines. Regent has three ships - the two largest and newest are all-suite, all-veranda. A number of its shore excursions are included in the fare.

SeaDream Yacht Club is known for its yacht-cruise ambiance. The fleet comprises twin boutique-sized ships. Each is all-suite and sleeps 112 guests. No verandas, but the inviting al fresco deck venues make up for it.

Silversea Cruises has arefined yet casual-toned shiplife. Silversea's fleet has five ships. All accommodations are suites - and a high percentage of them have verandas.  Decor is spiffy contemporary. for my guide on its Silver Spirit cruise ship.

Yachts of Seabourn is praised for its dining quality - and for incorporating small, engaging ports into its itineraries. Yachts of Seabourn has six ships. The smallest have few verandas, the largest have many.

Top runner-up

Paul Gauguin is the best ship for honeymooners. The Paul Gauguin sails French Polynesia.
