It is a remote paradise for divers, snorkelers, and surfers. And this archipelago has some of the most beautiful, pristine beaches in the world.
Surfers
Best period: Mid-December to mid-March. Waves often reach 2 meters (7 feet). Occasionally they tower 5 meters (17 feet).
Divers
and snorkelers
Best period: Late May to early October. The sea is relatively calm, so waves won't stir up the sand, obscuring your view.
Fernando de Noronha lies 345 kilometers (220 miles) off the Brazilian mainland. There are daily flights from Natal (one hour) and Recife (two hours).
Fernando de Noronha is a splendid example of where ecotourism is practiced and succeeds. The islanders take their precious ecosystem seriously, so the tourism infrastructure is purposely limited. Only several hundred visitors are permitted on the island at a time.
I strongly recommend making your air and accommodation reservations as well as obtaining a visitor's permit several months or more ahead of time. This is particularly critical for the peak season, late December through February.
