More tips & insights
on the Bahamas

Taxes

The Bahamas has no income, inheritance, corporate, or capital gains taxes.

Fishing

The Bahamas are praised by sport fishermen around the globe.

Snorkeling

There are more snorkeling sites than you can count because The Bahamas has the world's third largest coral reef system.

Size

The Bahamas comprise about 700 islands and over 2,500 cays. Approximately 95% of the nation's territory lies underwater. The highest point on land is only 63 meters (206 feet) above sea level.

Geographic location

Geographically, The Bahamas are Atlantic, not Caribbean Islands. This sovereign nation lies just beyond the Caribbean Sea. Because it is Caribbean-like and because most travelers and the travel industry consider it to be Caribbean, I use the Caribbean label in my website.

Name derivation

In the distant past, The Bahamas was called "Baja Mar" by the Spanish. That name translates "shallow sea", which is an apt description.

Language

The official and most prevalent language in the Bahamas is English (with a Brit, not a Yankee accent).

Currency

The Bahamian dollar is the official currency and is fixed with the US Dollar.
