Alaska cruise
tips you can trust

Air tours
No one should take an Alaska cruise without seeing the spectacular glaciers and rugged snow-capped mountains that can only be seen from the air. Skagway is a good place to do it.
The helicopter clearly offers the best experience - and the one that combines glacier sightseeing with dog sledding is the most exciting. Click helicopter sightseeing for photos and my description of the types of helicopter tours.
You will see lots of nature's glory in a floatplane. Click floatplane sightseeing for my page on floatplane tours.
Exploring Skagway's
main street
Broadway is the Inside Passage's most photogenic street. It's lined with old storefronts (see photo above). Many date back to the Gold Rush days.
White Pass &
Yukon Route Railway
This narrow-gauge railway was created in 1898 to transport miners and supplies to the gold-rich Yukon. Look out the windows of the period-piece train as it winds up a scenic mountain pass following the original route. There are 2 to 3 scheduled daily departures of this roundtrip outing lasting several hours.
Museums
These capture boom-town times: Corrington's Museum, Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, Skagway Museum & Archives, and Trails of '98 Museum.
Red Onion Saloon
Grab a beer in Skagway's atmospheric 1898 saloon. Go upstairs to tour an ex-bordello.
Gold Rush Cemetery
Reading the headstones and their dates gives you a time warp to the past.
Wilderness hiking
and sports fishing
Plenty of choices, both organized and individualized.
